A Message From Your Pastor Chris: Thanksgiving Is Everyday

The relationships we have with others should really be wide paths of gratitude and thanksgiving. Too often we get bogged down in the information on our interactions. Even when we do remember to say “thank you” to one another, we’re nearly consistently referring to merely one action or favor.

How often do we look beyond that?

In considering this, I’m reminded of a story in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus heals 10 lepers of their afflictions. Of the 10 who are cured, only one makes the effort to say “thank you.” But he isn’t only saying thank you for the healing. He praises God due to what’s happened and falls down. It’s clear that he understands who Jesus actually is. This is even acknowledged by Jesus by declaring that he has been made by the guy’s faith well, beyond Pastor Chris the simple curing of the disorder. By offering thanks and praise, the man revealed that he appreciated what had been done for him, but that he needed to be in relationship with God from that day forwards.

As we gather with our families and friends for Thanksgiving and the coming holidays, we’re given the same opportunity as this guy who was cured by Jesus. We now have the chance showing gratitude to the folks in our own lives, but we must go beyond simply thanking individuals for what they’ve done. If we desire the people we care about to know how important they may be to us, then we have to tell them. We must thank them for simply being parents, our friends, kids, siblings, relatives or whatever they may be. If we need those relationships to be as substantive and as deep as they should be, then they have to be cherished way above anything we appreciate or value.

All of the good things in our lives flow from the relationships we have with other, and specially from that significant relationship that individuals have with God. This year let’s not only thank people for what they’ve done.
